Asphalt paving in
L’Assomption.
Before asphalt paving in L’Assomption, the City requires a certificate of authorization to lay out or modify a parking area, and its sheet sets a home’s driveway between 3 and 9 metres wide, with a slope of 10% at most. We measure your lot at the visit, and the written quote states which application to plan for before the work date.
Asphalt paving in L’Assomption: no gravel inside the urbanization perimeter.
L’Assomption’s standards sheet requires that, inside the urbanization perimeter, the driveway and parking area be covered with a hard surface such as asphalt or concrete: for a home, gravel, stone dust and crushed stone are allowed as a surface only outside that perimeter. It also allows a single access per property on the same street, and a second one only if the lot has more than 15 metres of frontage and does not border a numbered road. At the visit, we measure your frontage and note which road runs along the lot, so the quote proposes a layout that meets both rules.
Local particulars
In L’Assomption, several numbered routes fall under the Ministère des Transports et de la Mobilité durable (the provincial transport ministry), according to the City’s snow removal policy, including Route 339 (rang de L’Achigan), Route 341 (montée L’Épiphanie), Route 344 (rang du Bas-de-L’Assomption Nord and boulevard de l’Ange-Gardien) and Route 343 (boulevard de l’Ange-Gardien Nord and montée de St-Sulpice). If your driveway opens onto one of them, the Ministère’s standards apply on top of zoning, and its authorization is needed to open an access or modify an existing one.

For a detached or semi-detached house, the sheet places the parking area in the front or side yard, or also in the backyard for a two- or three-unit dwelling, at least 2 metres from the front lot line and 1 metre from the other lot lines, except the dividing line of a parking area shared with the neighbour. In front of the house itself, it may take up at most 40% of the façade width of a detached home and 50% for a semi-detached one, but the full width of an attached garage. For a row house, the encroachment in front of the building is limited to 2 metres for an end unit and 50% of the front wall for a middle unit. Enlarging a parking area is not allowed if it means cutting down a tree whose trunk is more than 15 centimetres in diameter, measured at the stump 30 centimetres above the ground. When the driveway keeps its shape and its base is sound, resurfacing or an asphalt repair may be enough.

Excavation and foundation in L’Assomption: from gravel to asphalt
Inside the urbanization perimeter, L’Assomption’s zoning bans gravel as the surface of a driveway or parking area, but the sheet does not say whether an existing gravel driveway must be redone: ask the Division urbanisme et développement du territoire (urban planning). Once a building permit or certificate of authorization is issued, the parking area must be completed in less than 12 months. To go from gravel to asphalt, we first check what is in place, then top up or rebuild the crushed stone base, compacted in layers, with slopes between 1.5% and 6%, as the sheet requires for 4 spaces or fewer. Our excavation and foundation page details these steps, and the post on resurfacing or rebuilding helps you judge whether the current base can stay.

Permits and bylaws in L’Assomption
Under the City’s standards sheet, laying out or modifying an off-street parking area in L’Assomption first calls for a certificate of authorization. Applications are filed online, and the City counts on two weeks on average to issue a permit or certificate when all documents are provided, with the inspector having 45 days to review a complete file. The sheet does not say whether redoing a driveway exactly as it is, without changing its shape, requires that certificate: confirm with the Division urbanisme et développement du territoire (urban planning) before you sign. Commercial parking lot paving in L’Assomption
For a business, zoning bylaw 300-2015 sets the access lane between 6 and 12 metres wide and keeps it at least 30 metres from an intersection with a numbered provincial route. Since amendment 300-24-2018, every commercial parking lot must be edged by a continuous granite or cast-in-place concrete curb at least 0.15 metre high, and above 10 spaces, an area of 465 square metres or more needs underground drainage or another system approved by an engineer. The City publishes the bylaw and its amendments separately, so confirm the section in force with the Division urbanisme et développement du territoire (urban planning). We survey these constraints on site, then the written schedule for the commercial paving sets the order of the zones so that one access stays open.

Frequently asked questions in L’Assomption.
My driveway crosses a ditch: what does L’Assomption require for the culvert?
An installation permit, obtained before the work. The culvert must be a non-corrosive pipe, such as galvanized steel, plastic or precast concrete, at least 400 millimetres in diameter and no more than 9 metres long, set at least 1 metre from the neighbouring lot. A property may have no more than two culverts, at least 2 metres apart, and no level of the ditch or culvert may be changed without a permit from the building inspector. Maintaining the ditch and the culvert remains entirely the owner’s responsibility.
The City’s snowplow damaged my driveway: what should I do in L’Assomption?
Contact the public works division right away: a member of the division comes to note the situation and explains the steps to restore it. Damage caused by winter operations of the City or its contractor can be reported until May 1 of each year. Clearing the snowbank left in front of your curb cut remains your responsibility, however high or wide it is. Before winter, the snow removal policy suggests flagging the features you want to protect with visual markers; it also provides that street snow is, by default, blown onto the adjacent lots.
Is a semicircular driveway allowed in L’Assomption?
Yes, in the front yard only, if the house sits at least 9 metres from the front lot line. The two accesses must be at least 9 metres apart, separated by a strip of grass or landscaping, and the part parallel to the street must stay at least 4 metres from the street line. The lane is 3.50 to 4.5 metres wide and passes at least 2 metres from the house.
Where can my temporary carport go on my new driveway in L’Assomption?
A winter car shelter is allowed from October 15 to April 15, with a free certificate of authorization, and only on the parking space or the lane leading to it. It must stay at least 3 metres from the street pavement, 1 metre from the right-of-way and every lot line, and 1.50 metres from a fire hydrant. During the visit, we check with you that the new driveway leaves enough room for the shelter.
